Edmonton will accept over 30,000 newcomers this year

According to the Conference Board of Canada, Edmonton is set to welcome approximately 30,000 newcomers this year. This follows last year’s trend, which saw over 33,000 newcomers. Despite an expected decrease in the coming years, the numbers will continue to surpass the 20-year average.  The director of economic forecasting, Ted Mallett, attributes this trend to the federal government’s expedited immigration, higher wages, affordable housing in Prairie cities, and Alberta’s robust economy. However, this growth necessitates adequate real estate development and infrastructure improvements.  The second State of Immigration and Settlement Report also highlighted immigrants’ challenges, underscoring the need for an updated immigration policy. The report proposed inclusive education, anti-racism training, and authentic relationships with immigrants. The city council is now considering policy revisions. Immigration targets stabilizing to support sustainable Canada’s  growth Immigration is crucial for Canada’s growth, with about 23% of the population being immigrants, the highest among the G7. The 2024 immigration target is 485,000, 1.2% of Canada’s population. Canada’s working population is declining, with the current ratio of workers to seniors at 3:1, expected to drop to 2:1.  This aging workforce leads to labor shortages, which immigration can alleviate. Canada welcomed about 2,500 Afghan refugees

On November 28, 2023, the Canadian government made an update regarding the Afghan refugees arriving in the country. The last update shows Canada has accepted 2,490 Afghan refugees since October 30, 2023.  As of now, Canada has welcomed a total of 42,905 Afghan refugees. Canada received 20,445 Afghans and their families’ applications under the Special Immigration Measures Program for Afghans who had assisted the Government of Canada in Afghanistan.  12,645 Afghans arrived in Canada under that program, and 21,635 Afghan nationals came under the Humanitarian program. In addition, Canada admitted 2,855 applicants under the pathway for extended family members of former interpreters. The Special Immigration Measures Program intends to admit 18,000 people to Canada. To be eligible for the Special Immigration Measures Program, you must meet all of the following requirements: You are an Afghan citizen. Your employment involved a significant and/or long-term relationship with the Government of Canada, which could include interpreters who worked with the Canadian Armed Forces or local staff who currently or previously worked at the Canadian Embassy in Afghanistan. You or a member of your family were in Afghanistan on or after July 22, 2021 (the start date of this special program). You are not eligible for this program if you leave Afghanistan before July 22, 2021. You are not prohibited from entering Canada. Ontario is raising the minimum wage for early childhood educators

Ontario is increasing salaries for early childhood educators to alleviate labor shortages. Ontario is raising the minimum wage for early childhood educators (ECE) to $23.86 per hour in 2023, up from the initially planned $20 to address staff shortages.  This was part of the childcare workforce strategy released by Education Minister Stephen Lecce in November. This increase is expected to position Ontario’s starting wages for ECEs among Canada’s highest from being one of the lowest. The province aims to create 86,000 new spaces by 2026 under the national childcare system, despite warnings of a potential shortage of 8,500 ECEs by then. An agreement Ontario signed with the federal government to participate in the $10-a-day program included a wage floor of $18 per hour in 2022, with annual increases of $1 to $25. Education Minister Stephen Lecce’s new plan calls for raising the floor to $23.86 per hour the following year and going up by $1 per hour after that, to $25.86 in 2026. No matter where they reside, all Canadian families should have access to excellent, affordable, and flexible early learning and childcare, according to the government of Canada. 92% of licensed childcare centers and home daycares have already reduced childcare center fees for families with children by 50%, and by 2026, the average daily fee is expected to drop to $10. These goals apply to all regions outside of Quebec, where there is already a well-established, affordable early learning and childcare system. There are currently regulated childcare facilities in nearly half of all provinces and territories that cost $10 per day on average or less. On December 14, 2023, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) conducted an invitation draw under the HCP Stream. Canada’s trucking industry needs at least 20,000 new truck drivers, a shortage that poses a risk to the economy due to the country’s dependence on trucking. Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada report states that the shortage became critical during the pandemic as some drivers left and demand increased.  With a third of current drivers nearing retirement, the labor gap could reach 30,000 if recruitment doesn’t improve. This issue is nationwide, with provinces like Ontario needing 6,100 drivers. According to the report, factors such as an aging workforce, demographics, and driver pay contribute to the shortage.  The industry must appeal to the youth to combat this, with Trucking Canada launching a major PR effort and the Choose to Truck social media campaign. “Without taking any actions to improve the current situation, the truck driver shortage in Canada will further worsen as the workforce ages and insufficient interest in the profession fails to bridge the growing gap in the number of available truck drivers,” according to the report released by PwC. In 2024, Canadian workers expect a 3.6% pay increase According to a financial consulting firm, Normandin Beaudry study, Canadian workers may expect an average salary hike of 3.6% next year. The survey also indicates that 43% of businesses are considering an extra 1% average salary increase. Industries may witness above-average pay rises including:  STEM,  Real Estate,  Manufacturing, and  Accommodation and Food Services.  In addition, Quebec, Yukon, Ontario, and British Columbia are predicted to experience salary growth in line with or exceeding the national average, while the rest may receive slightly less. These pay raises and Canada’s top-notch quality of life make it a desirable location for potential newcomers. Results of the annual salary increase survey were made public by the Canadian financial management consulting firm on Tuesday. A survey conducted among over 700 organizations revealed that except for salary freezes, employers plan to increase employee wages by an average of 3.6% in 2024. The consulting firm notes that only 2 percent of businesses anticipate freezing salaries for the upcoming year, which is a similar decline from the 3 to 5 percent average of wage freezes prior to the pandemic. On December 18, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued 1,325 Invitations to Apply (ITA) to candidates under the latest Canada Express Entry draw #275. In this draw, IRCC invited candidates under all immigration programs. In the latest round of invitations, the cut-off score was 542 points, 19 points fewer than in the previous all-program draw.  The tie-breaking rule for this round was November 6, 2023, at 14:40:23 UTC.  As of December 17, 2023, are 208,638 profiles registered in the Express Entry pool.
