IRCC processing times for citizenship and family sponsorship applications were updated on February 7, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the application processing times to help applicants know how long their application processing may take until a decision is made.  According to the update, IRCC processes citizenship applications within 23 months. Application processing times for spousal sponsorship applications were around 14-16 months, while PR applications for parents and grandparents took 39 months.  The latest IRCC data reveals that the Canadian immigration backlog was at a staggering 918,300, and 1.055 million applications were processed within IRCC service standards. These processing times are designed to provide updated weekly processing times based on information collected over the past six months. Ottawa open work permit program extended for Hong Kong nationals

On February 6, 2023, the Government of Canada extended the Ottawa open work permit program for eligible Hong Kong nationals. According to the expanded eligibility requirements, Hong Kong residents who have graduated within the past ten years from a post-secondary learning institution in Canada or abroad can obtain a work permit for up to 3 years.    Before, only those who had graduated within the last five years were eligible for application. Moreover, Canada has created two pathways to permanent residency for qualified Hong Kong nationals and their families. Immigration Minister Honourable Sean Fraser, “expanding the open work permit public policy also means that spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children of Hong Kong residents can apply for a study or work permit in Canada, resulting in even more workers for employers to hire and more people coming to our communities.” “We need to continue to bring in more immigrants to ensure that Canadian business owners can hire the workers they need to support our economy.” In November 2020, Ottawa committed to creating a program for immigrants from Hong Kong to immigrate to Canada. In the latest BC PNP draw British Columbia invited 245 candidates on February 7, 2023, the Government of British Columbia issued new invitations under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) and invited qualified Skills, and Immigration candidates.  In the general draw, the province invited 207 candidates. The minimum score for candidates invited to this draw was 82-102 points. The province issued 25 ITAs to candidates under the childcare-targeted draw for early childhood educators (NOC 42202). In the Healthcare-targeted draw, BC invited 13 candidates. In both targeted draws, candidates had to score 60 points and more.  In total, the province invited 245 candidates for this draw. On January 31, 2023, the Government of Ontario held a new draw in the Employer Job Offer Foreign Worker Stream (EJO FWS) Stream of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). The province issued 611 targeted invitations to apply (ITAs) to tech and healthcare occupations.    The minimum score for this draw was 53, 18 points more than the previous draw. Express Entry draw for the Federal Skilled Worker Program on February 2, 2023, the next day after Express Entry draw #239, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued 3,300 Invitations to Apply (ITA) to candidates under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) in the new FSW-targeted draw. British Columbia invited up to 284 candidates in the latest BC PNP draw on January 31, 2023, British Columbia issued new invitations in the Skilled Worker – International Graduate categories of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP). In the Tech-targeted draw, BC issued 243 invitations with a minimum score of 85 points.  In the Childcare-targeted draw for early childhood educators (NOC 42202), the province invited 18 candidates who scored 60 points. In the Healthcare-targeted draw, the province issued 18 invitations.  Additionally, fewer than 5 invitations have been issued for other priority occupations (NOCs 31103, 32104). The province invited up to 284 candidates with a score of 60-85 points. New Brunswick increased the wages in Atlantic Canada on January 30, 2023, the New Brunswick Government increased the minimum wage to $14.75 per hour, which will be in effect on April 1, 2023. The current minimum wage in the province is $13.75 per hour. This is the third $1 per-hour increase to the minimum wage over the last 12 months.    In 2022, the province temporarily suspended indexing to ensure minimum wage earners receive a livable salary and improve the quality of life for 19,000 such workers (representing 5.7% of workers in the province).   Honourable Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Trevor Holder Said: In terms of New Brunswick’s minimum wage, “our government has made great progress, from indexing adjustments to the consumer price index to making a necessary course correction in 2022 to make us more competitive and raise the standard of living,”   About the New Brunswick Atlantic Canada One of Canada’s thirteen provinces and territories in New Brunswick.
